LA Kings Announcement a Positive for SA Hockey Academy

Dunmore, AB - On November 4, 2018, the LA Kings announced that Willie Desjardins will become the 25th head coach in the LA Kings history.

“We couldn’t be more excited for Willie,” says Assistant Superintendent Reagan Weeks.  “This opportunity is great for him and our students.  It’s not very often that a young person with a dream of playing in the NHL can say their mentor and coach is also the head coach of the LA Kings.”

When Coach Desjardins partnered with Prairie Rose School Division to create the Willie Desjardins South Alberta Hockey Academy, it was with the goal to help shape youth in Southern Alberta through sport.

“When we started the academy we knew that we could provide students with outstanding academic, athletic and leadership opportunities,” says Desjardins.  “This will not change.  I am committed to this academy and to the goals my team has set in place.”

The Academy, three months into its first year has already exceeded expectations.  Dedicated coaches with extensive knowledge and experience playing professional hockey are working with students in each location, cutting-edge technology is being used to enhance performance, and students are learning curriculum focused around excellence, character, citizenship, sportsmanship and hockey development. Additionally, the Global Sport Academy integration of curriculum, annual planning, mentoring and coaching, provides the program with continued access to experts in academy programming.

“Willie working as an NHL head coach adds even further opportunities for our academy students,” says Weeks.  “He will continue to build on and off ice curriculum and connect with coaches and students regularly as a program mentor.”

“My goals have not changed,” says Desjardins. “I remain committed to ensuring our student athletes succeed both on and off the ice.”

Prairie Rose looks forward to continuing the relationship with Willie Desjardins and the South Alberta Hockey Academy from the Staples Center.
